The Costa Rican police force have discovered the countries largest ever drug haul with an estimated 5.800kg of cocaine, equivalent to 6 tonnes of illegal drugs.
The drugs were inside a container filled with ornamental flowers and other items. It was destined for Rotterdam, The Netherlands, as stated by the Costa Rican national newspaper La Nación.
The suspicious container was spotted on Friday and a search was carried out the next day. When police officers entered the container at location of APM Terminals port of Moín, Limón, they found 202 suitcases piled up on top of each other weighing around 1kg each. The cocaine was in separate packets professionally wrapped.
A suspect has been arrested, he had no previous convictions. A press conference was held on Saturday afternoon. Interior minister Michael Soto Rojas confirmed that this was the largest ever drug seize. The European market value is estimated at €126m ($137m).
The last time they saw a haul close to this size was a decade ago of almost three tonnes. Central America is one of the main routes for drugs heading for the U.S & Europe.
