Beijing Warns Washington of Retaliation Over HK Human Rights Act

| | , ,

China warned the United States on Thursday that it will take “firm counter measures”  to President Trump’s US legislation of the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, aimed at protecting the rights of Hong Kong residents. China also said all attempts to interfere in Hong Kong affairs were doomed to fail.

The new laws require Washington to certify at least once a year that Hong Kong retains sufficient autonomy to qualify for special US trade considerations. The new law also prohibits the export of certain military equipment that could be used against the Hong Kong population. The US could also impose sanctions on officials responsible for human rights violations in Hong Kong.

President Trump said that his decision comes “out of respect for President Xi Jinping, China and the people of Hong Kong, hoping that the leaders of China and Hong Kong will resolve their differences for peace and prosperity for all”.
